"Consistency, dedication, and persistence will pay huge dividends and there are no shortcuts when it comes to training." - Joby Gutierrez, MA, USAT and USAC Coach
Joby Gutierrez hasn’t always been an elite athlete. As a high school student, he recalls being the "slowest runner" on a team of 30. Joby didn’t let this stop him though. Though it was difficult and most of the time discouraging, he stuck with it, worked hard, and by the time he was a senior, he’d reached ‘average’ status. Continuing his run training throughout his college years, Joby began to make significant improvements and found himself doing quite well in local road races.
Looking for a new challenge, Joby signed up for his first sprint triathlon at the age of 26. However, there was one big problem. He could barely swim to the other side of the pool without gasping for air. Taking the lessons of hard work and persistence that he had learned early on, Joby designed and began an extensive training program. Through the guidance and support of seasoned triathletes, Joby began to hit his stride athletically. This small taste of success in his quest to boost his endurance became his motivation to work harder and smarter. Joby couldn’t get enough. Joby began to read and study all the latest research related to endurance and performance. Coupled with his positive attitude and growing education, Joby moved forward steadily, each year bringing with it marked improvement.
Now, Joby consistently places in the top 1% of his age group and in the top 1% to 4% of the entire field, establishing himself as a seasoned runner and triathlete.
Joby’s coaching philosophy is that all athletes can improve. No matter what levels you’ve reached, there’s always room for growth.
As a coach, I identify areas that need improvement and structure a program to develop these areas in addition to refining your strengths.
