Need help losing those last few pounds?
Published on May 03, 2010Email To Friend    Print Version

Trying to lose a little extra weight but just can't seem to get those last few pounds to come off.  Making a few small changes can help you  drop the last few pounds.    Here are a few hints that may help.

   1)  Choose your carbs wisely. Fortunately, the no carb diet fad appears to be on its way out. But just for the record, let me state that carbs are good and your body needs carbs to function properly.  Healthy carbohydrates can come in the form of vegetables, fruit or grain.  Calorically speaking, vegetables carry the least number of calories per ounce.  Second, fruit carries the second lowest amount of calories per ounce.  Finally, grains carry the most calories per serving.  Use this information as you plan your meals.  Since grains carry the most number of calories per ounce you may want to think about adding more vegetables in place of the grains.  Make your meals "vegetable heavy".  Choose vegetables that are high in fiber as this create the full feeling that signals our brain to stop eating. If you're craving dessert, consider a piece of fruit rather than a traditional dessert item.

2)  Make sure you have healthy fat in your diet. Fat does not make you fat.  Excess calories make you fat.  Without fat your body tends to feel hungry throughout the day.  Make sure your meal contains healthy fat.  A little fat with each meal can keep you from snacking on unnecessary calories later in the day.  So, invest in fat now and save calories later.

3)  Increase lean muscle mass.  Wouldn't all of you like to burn more calories in a state of rest?  Developing lean muscle mass can help with this by boosting your metabolism.  A pound of muscle burns more calories than a pound of fat.  If you have not added strength training to your existing cardio routine, consider doing so.  In addition to speeding up your metabolism, weight bearing exercise(strength training) also helps to preserve bone mass, which will benefit all of us.
